flying (excerpted 152111)
Sep. 4th, 2012 02:13 pmAnd on the plane I watched as the whole sky dimmed and everything became hazy, striated in blue, as though you could see the edge of the world dropping straight off and the only remnants were blue, blue, blue, just shades and shades of it, and then the beautiful white gleam of the moon over all. I'm sure some of it was the glass of the airplane window, but it was like living in a watercolour painting, except for the moon: the moon could have been cut out with lasers, it was so sharp and white. Like a wash of colour with a new silver coin placed on top. I was sitting behind the wing, so that even while the blue layers darkened and smeared all together into black and the moon rose too high to see out the tiny porthole, I could still see the reflection of the moon on the wings of the plane. Truly, very beautiful.
And I guess I saw the sprawl of open water and fields and then later, in the dark, the lights of major cities - I did fly over the East Coast - and they too were lovely, but in the face of that blue they can't hold a candle, can they?

Because I ran across this today:
Jun. 21st, 2010 11:25 pmAbout 'universal suffrage':
1. The association of 'suffrage' and 'suffering' has been made in my mind (and probably other peoples'), which is unfortunate for the promotion of democracy.
2. Stop telling me we have universal suffrage. (*note: is Canadian). If we had an all-ages-can-vote policy, we'd have universal suffrage. See? Universal. Not majority suffrage. Universal. Until everyone in this country (regardless of mental state, age, and all those other factors that come into play) is allowed to vote or in some way impact the way this government works, we don't have universal suffrage. Period. Find another word.

Jun. 2nd, 2010 11:26 pmThe eastern sky was an orange streak, and the skyscrapers across the river were like burnished copper, glass windows reflecting the sunset. It was almost as though a massive artist had sculpted blocks of bronze or copper, set it down, and let the dusk close in around it. As though a mirror had been cut into the shape of tall buildings, and set to reflect the sunset.
