Remembrance Day
Nov. 10th, 2009 04:36 pmTomorrow is November 11th.
That poppy is not a decoration. It is not a pretty red-and-black flower you can stick onto your shirt whenever you feel like it. It is a symbol, something that says that you remember and respect what the veterans of WWI, WWII, the Vietnam wars, and the soldiers in Afghanistan are doing and have done for you. All the fundamental freedoms you have, the rights that the Western world has, the choices you can make--those are all yours, thanks to the veterans.
All that's ever been asked is a pause in your day to say, "Thank you for all that you have done; I will remember." for your rights and freedoms. One of the rights you have is to not have to go to a remembrance ceremony, but what else can we offer the veterans?
It starts with a thank you, and a poppy worn over the heart.
It is the one day that people will stop for two minutes and think about what was sacrificed for us to have all the rights and freedoms we have. It is two minutes, out of three hundred and sixty-five days, that we stop and think about our veterans.
It makes me angry to see people who donate ten cents to buy a poppy , even more so the people who do not wear a poppy and blithely say: "Oh, no thanks, I've got lots at home."That poppy is not a decoration.
