I don't get all those writing clichés about eyes expressing emotion (and a random side question about what people notice) so here, have a poll.

ETA: OH CURSES I forgot to change the last question to a check question. Comment if you have other options >.>

I'm all about the eyes ;) Favorite two boyfriends (one of which became Hubby) have the most AMAZING eyes. In most people, emotions will speak plainly in the eyes when voices stay quiet. Someone might manage to master body language, but I've yet to meet anyone who can be steely-eyed when anything other than severely pissed off.

The EYES HAVE IT MAN. They can twinkle, glint, glimmer, darken, brighten, and so much more. Of course, some folks are more expressive than others, and if you're lucky (like me)you may one day meet someone (or two) whose eyes actually change color dramatically according to their moods. Who needs a lie detector when you've got that?

:D Good to know this is rooted in fact.

I personally always look for fidgets.

For me, eyes and facial expression go hand in hand. If your brows are narrowed, it could mean you're unamused/angry/trying to concentrate. If your eyes are widened, would your jaw drop or would your mouth be a little pursed "o"? :o

It's odd 'cause in fiction, I like writing about eyes, and in animanga I find something different/fun/fascinating looking at big shoujo eyes and the like. :P But IRL, I'm generally uncomfortable maintaining eye contact with people. I'm more likely to look at their cheeks or forehead or overall face to compensate so they wouldn't feel like I'm ignoring them (I'm not), it's just that direct eye contact makes me feel like the other person is looking into me, and it's a little... probing. I speak as someone on the high-function autism scale, so YMMV.

*nods* Yeah, I get what you mean by not wanting to look them into the eye all the time. I always feel like I'm looking at them too long, or staring, or something, so maybe I never did pick up the messages.

That's too bad. At least I know that some people see them, at least, even if I don't :P

The eyes don't have it

To my mind it's not the eyes that express things, but the body language around them. Whether we know it or not, talk about the eyes expressing emotion is metaphor and/or analogy.

As for what I notice when meeting someone, it's definitely the face in general, but also (on women, yes I conform to the stereotype) the figure and so, skirts if short or otherwise flattering.

Regarding expression around eyes: yeah, that's how I've always seen it. But others do see it in the eyes, so I guess it's just a personal thing.
