Agent Carter (episodes 6 and 7)

So I watched these back to back, which is good because there was a horrible cliffhanger on episode 6. Somehow I managed to forget that this was a world with superheroes and I had to rearrange my expectations and suspension of disbelief when the mind-control thing happened. FOCUS! But after I reminded myself it was a universe where the serum existed and everything, I could go back. I think the
Also when there was the little caption "Russia 1944" somehow I thought "wow, Peggy timetravelled?" before facepalming.
It is Ivanchenko (sp), right? The father of Vanko from IM2? (The less annoying antagonist. I could not stand Justin Hammer. Just the thought of him makes me twitch. RRRR) I really thought Dottie was going to shoot him and was agonized, waiting for her to choose which body part to shoot first--nothing says a great assassin like one who coolly figures out which part of the body to puncture first!--, and thinking very sadly about how the poor guy wasn't going to see the Empire State building. It is really quite amazing how fast my sympathies shifted when the Leviathan thing became clear. Although, if he specifically lured them Eastern Europe to get into the SSR, then what part did the physicist he was supposedly looking after play? Maybe an actual random civilian who is taken from his family.
I still love all the Jarvis & Peggy interactions. Especially the swinging table thing. And how Peggy answers--"what if there are people on the other side?" "They'll face a shower of glass" "What if there are people on the other side with guns?" "We'll face a shower of bullets" (approximately, can't remember verbatim). I wonder where Stark is, if Jarvis can't reach him.
Oh my god, the SSR are incompetent. "Shoddy policework" is right. They're warned about Dottie and told to shoot on sight and they STILL hesitate. But they should have had her cornered and she still got away.
Also, the SSR really need training in how to deal with people. How to deal with crying people, for instance. Don't they interview victims who are shaken up? And finding Dottie next to passed-out Peggy, for god's sake take her in for questioning and don't be put off by her panicked exterior! She's evidence! It's a huge case, you need every hint of evidence you've got!
During the dream sequence when Dooley's imagining he's home early, and his wife asks why he's home extra early (earlier than he'd said) and he makes those weird replies, I kept hoping that his wife would realize he was clearly totally out of his mind (actually, in it) and send him back so he could un-handcuff Jarvis and Peggy, but unfortunately that sort of dialogue is always coded as "seen the error of his ways and is now prepared to be loving husband" instead of "holy cow something is very wrong".
Apparently I don't care if Dooley has a happy family life, I just want Peggy to catch the Leviathan.
I can't read the conversations on meme about this. Some of it's way too advanced (how on earth did people manage to guess the person who killed Krzeminski was female, or that Dottie was the antagonist by her first appearance?) and sort of manage to spoil things for me; some of the discussion is just plain wank reporting, and I'm not interested in shipwars; and some of it just plain idiocy, like the person who's arguing Sousa is a Nice Guy, capital letters, for being betrayed in episode 6. Of course he feels like he's been betrayed! The whole SSR feels like it's been betrayed, because the evidence looks like Peggy's working for Leviathan! For god's sake.
I got spoiled for the Dottie/Peggy kiss--should really have seen that coming when Dottie picks up the lipstick when searching Peggy's apartment though.
Still ship nothing.
Oh god, that reminds me. That outfit Dottie has when she's posing as a mother, that's one scary severe outfit. I've only just realized it is maybe a black widow outfit, actually. And the mob-fighting gas thing was unexpected. I thought--and I guess this is probably partly attributable to living in the 21st century--it was a bomb. Or, when people started coughing, that it'd be something that would kill them, like chemical warfare. Also, I hoped that the old lady who tried to support Dottie, who looked back when she left, would get up and see what was going on; I don't know about you but a mother with a stroller simply walking out without the stroller would definitely strike me as unusually and a little alarming, because it seems quite out of character. It must have been some gas though; most of the moviegoers are not fighters in any way and I really wonder how they could have all done each other fatal harm. But maybe it's a combination of killed/injured, and plain knocked out?
Like I said, WORLD WITH SUPERHEROES. Shouldn't try to examine too closely.
Oh god I can't wait for the finale. And hoping very very much that it gets renewed. omg yes please sign me up for more of Peggy beating up people and doing secret agenty things.
Also I looked at Hayley Atwell's twitter (it is hilarious) and she has tons of fun pictures, fanart reblogged, etc. I especially liked this one, which she captioned "Agent Carter: The Musical" (don't worry, SFW and adorable): https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B7nOtAiCIAE8UdJ.jpg:large

Date: Feb. 24th, 2015 02:05 pm (UTC)The men are completely incompetent, mostly because they're so proud of themselves and don't actually look at what's around them. They're so caught up in their self importance, vs. Peggy who knows she can't afford to miss anything.
I'm assuming that Leviathan wanted the gas because then they could modify it to make their soulless assassins even more dangerous than they already are. We're assuming that if they can't recreate the serum for themselves, they're going to mass produce assassins for the sheer numbers to overwhelm intelligence agencies. A big stumbling block would be the girls' emotions and natural tendencies to form attachments. It's prolly why they had Dottie kill her friend as a girl, but there's bound to be inefficiencies in that system, since they lose trainees. Gas them up not to care, though, and they won't have to lose a single girl. Chilling thought.

Date: Feb. 25th, 2015 01:47 am (UTC)I still have not seen the AoU trailers. I should really get on that.
I KNOW, right?! They are terrible. Dooley might want to take a class in motivating people too. I'd guess that Peggy probably has a ton more experience; some of the other SSR agents served in the army/navy/airforce but probably didn't do the sort of specialized work she did.
Is the gas the weapon they wanted? I assumed from the crate's size that there was more than one weapon inside. The gas seemed to make people very unstable which I imagine isn't a very good trait in assassins--they would probably need to control themselves very well, esp if they have to blend in like Dottie.
Yeah, I agree. I mean, you're talking about losing at least 50% of your efforts! And you can't even bring in random other people to be killed, sparing you the training effort; I assume the reason behind the horrible exercise is to kill someone you're already close to, know well, etc so that you can go ahead and kill anyone else in the future.

Date: Feb. 25th, 2015 10:22 am (UTC)I've seen the idea in fanfic that the Red Room had candidates kill enemies of the state and deserters. Probably not too many of those in Soviet Russia as there might have been in WWII Russia. But it really is inefficient to train them Battle Royale style. I suppose that time period though, they felt girls were disposable, and would simply get more to take the dead girl's place. :(
