Noooooo that's a terrible resolution! No! Especially since it's an adaptation of Sleeping Beauty! I reject your attempts at making an ending!

You don't do that. It's not grimdark or gory, it's just not right. This is the sort of ending that starts books, McKinley, not ends them!

I really like the air of the novel, for the most part; it doesn't take itself too seriously. Katriona's village is named Foggy Bottom! The princess-tomboy extremes I could have done without* but it was basically delightful for the majority of the book. But the ending was weirdly off.

For one, the queen loves her daughter and misses her terribly during Rosie's twenty-one years of 'fostering'. That's the thing I can't get past. There's no easy way for this to resolve easily. Katriona and Aunt are her family. But they are now deliberately and grossly deceiving the queen! Uhhhhh that leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth. Peony is a paragon, and it makes Rowland's vow work out, but Peony is still not actually the queen's daughter - how can you just substitute one of them in there?

*Instead of Madonna-whore, it's like princess-tomboy. The pendulum swings too far--it's like it's not a pendulum with gradations in characterization, that instead what we get is a complete polarization, like the pendulum only has 2 spots. I like complexity.
