If you require an account to be made, and give me two fields to enter a password, I would SERIOUSLY appreciate it if you would lay out the requirements clearly. Do not give me a "streamlined" interface devoid of any instructions whatsoever on allowable characters and then kick me back with a giant list of ERROR! when I magically do not, in fact, mind-read your completely arbitrary rules for password acceptability. I have had this happens so many times now.

ETA: and having fixed my password oh my god, if you have an issue with my username, kindly point that out at the same time you're telling me about the password! Do it all at once so I don't have to keep resubmitting. ARGH!

Yup. Arbitrary limitations require very detailed instructions. For chrissakes.

OMG yes, I know what you mean. I. just hate it when you fill everything out but then find out your password wasn't ridiculously complex enough there's no hope in hell of you remembering it

I often feel like if I, with absolutely no training in website user experience, can point to obvious ways to improve user experience....you are paying your user experience person way too much.

I don't know what site this is, but ugh. I am not a fan of "streamlined interfaces" that are unreadable/unintelligible/otherwise hard to see. Can't wait till the Seas of Whitespace trend dies a merciful death.

Arbitrary password requirements are a bad policy anyway. They make the password harder to remember, which makes it more likely that you'll have to keep it written down somewhere. Much better security to let people decide for themselves.

I can't agree more. I don't understand how this kind of oversight happens (it is not a small company).

YESSS I also have kind of given up on trying to make new different passwords for sites where I just want to give a resume and cover letter! Rargh.

Oh god I hear you on the endless whitespace too. It's so bright! Why is everything javascripty so it takes five minutes to load?

Well I think if you physically write it down, the chances of someone breaking into your place is generally pretty low..and they're not after your internet passwords! So that's safe. But most people (like me, sigh) will just give up and use one password instead, which is terrible. (But I keep having to make so many accounts!!)
