preliminary thoughts (I'm flailing, no question)

omg I actually ship Micah/Raisa now. Screw Mellony.

What would be nice is a Micah/Raisa/Han/Amon ot4. [I wonder how Annamaya feels about Amon? I mean, he's literally magically bound to protect the Gray Wolf line above all costs.]

I feel vindicated about Reid Nightwalker. Good riddance. He has always been unbelievably pushy.

Aww, I'm sorry that we don't get more Raisa/Amon. Just a little here and there.

Pity for Fiona Bayar.

There were so many secrets, double-crosses, politicking. Lots and lots of dramatic irony, while I longed to shout the truth of different characters. Everyone moved under mistaken impressions, which didn't bother me (sometimes it annoys me in will-they-won't-they plots - just talk like adults, you idiots!), since one of the major themes is the fractured peoples of the Fells and how everyone needed to unite.

I really enjoyed the Wizarding Council politicking. And when the reveal about Gryphon came around, it made lots of things fall into place.

I'm a bit disappointed in Averill Lightfoot. Oh Averill, no! Why do you treat Han like that? And Nightwalker was such a bad, bad decision...

Where is Willo, at the end? I wish there was some more action in the camps.

I almost gave up when it looked like Dancer died. NOOOOOO you can't do that! You leave Dancer alone!

Not quite as gut-punch as Amon Byrne's father dying, but still: at least Night Bird had come around, stood on her own two feet and was killed for that. Reid, you really suck at reading people - you don't get that Raisa wouldn't stand for that, and neither would Night Bird.

So Gavan Bayar torched Southbridge & Ragmarket? It has to be him, without Micah (I think he genuinely thought that Han did it, and rushed down to warn Raisa), because the fire was magical, after all. And the whole Pilfer warehouse deal.

I wonder if Raisa & Han will try to fix poor Alger Waterlow's reputation. I agree with Crow: "Hanalea a saint and me a demon? If Lucas has been defending me for a thousand years, it hasn't been very effective." (page 41)

This was basically Alger Waterlow apologia, which is okay since now we know what actually happened. I think the stint in the Bayar's prison (AGAIN) greatly endeared him to me, too. How useful!

You know who Micah Bayar reminds me of? Draco Malfoy. Trapped between familial ambition (GAVAN BAYAR, plus Fiona & Micah's sorta struggle) and what he actually wants (not sure?) I think he has blue eyes though.

I really enjoyed the narration by Han, when his accent comes in. The part where Han implies that Gavan is the one who's good at dealing with killers (with the implication Gavan's done the killing) is priceless: "Bayar slowly turned his head and gazed at Han, his blue eyes scrimmed with ice." (page 106)

I'm disappointed there wasn't much about Ragmarket & Southbridge in the end. There's some mention that they're using guerrilla tactics on the Ardenines (given the destroyed urban area and the training, makes a lot of sense) but I think with Raisa's reaching-out to them, they would have made good allies.

The series feels incomplete. Amon is just gonna hang there, I suppose? There's a war on. (Still.) The Demonai are a pretty big problem; it looks like Marisa Pines camp is able to change and flex, true traders, but the Demonai really do not inspire me with confidence; they want to have things their way, even if it means destruction of everything around them. Also, Han and Raisa have just married, i.e. they have just broken the Nǽming in the biggest way possible. That can't possibly not have massive repercussions.

I forget entirely Han's background. His mum and sister live in the city, but I forget why and how he's raised in the clans. How did he have time to learn slidehand and make a name as Cuffs? I forget entirely.

YEAH. Oof, I didn't expect to come out shipping Micah/Raisa at all. Also poor Amon is basically doomed to serving his queen forever like that :(
