Writer's Block: Marital license

Personally, I thought that marriage was "until death do us part".

However, if there's an issue with abuse, or it's unhealthy for the two people to stay together, I think the marriage should be dissolved. But since marriage is still considered (more or less) a lifelong commitment, this renewal seems to be odd.
