I think it's both the desire to fly and also this thing for hot male angels. I read a lot but I do read a fair amount of stuff written by women for women, and the angels are almost always men, and they're usually hot beefcakes (muscley for flying!) It's kind of a what-if thing and a melding of hotness + ideal/perfection (religious overtones too), I think.
