Thor: Ragnorak!

silverflight8Last book read for bookclub wasn't that great either. I feel like all I do is froth at the mouth about bad books, but I HAVE read good ones this year - I still have this massive thing half-written-up for Ancillary Justice, and I'm currently reading SPQR which I really like! Though I have to say, I never have done much reading into Classics so what I really also need is a very broad, very basic chronology with years in BCE to help. And a index of names and what they are most known for.
I also saw Thor: Ragnorak today! I really enjoyed it - more than I expected. I like the MCU generally, and of all the strands of MCU I like Thor the best. I like all of them, except Spider-Man which I've never seen, but I like Thor the best.
*Not gonna be chained underneath a serpent dripping venom, eh?
*Hela is pretty incredible.
*Sometimes villains are unsatisfying (not really effective). Others are too effective, aka the dilemma of you'll have no one to rule after this. But...Hela neatly fixes this - her domain is death.
*I guess Odin did not see Hela coming back (though his scene in Norway seems like he saw it coming? Did he expect to live forever? Did he merely put the decision off?) but if you live in a society where necromancy is possible, wouldn't you cremate? Freya was sent off in a pyre. Then again, if necromancy works, I guess physics and biology is off the table anyway (we don't use our bones to move...it's all that decayed flesh...) so I guess this is invalid.
*Those horns are a lot scarier and less ridiculous than Loki's helmet. Maybe it's because they only come out when she's absolutely annihilating everything.
*I love that they're all able to summon their armour in a snap.
*OMFG LOL at the Loki and Thor staged drama. I can't decide if it's so perfect because Loki is SO obsessed with it, or almost secondhandedly embarrassed for Loki, because that is so bad. Love that it was a death scene. How can the courtiers around "Odin" stand it? Also...for this to work, has Loki-as-Odin been enacting these plays every day or something? Is there a whole artistic trend for this, since there's demand? Doesn't anyone feel "Odin" is acting oddly?
*I do like that Hela sorta glancingly addresses the plastering-over of decorations. But still...wouldn't he just wholescale destroy? It's not exactly like he's poor. He's conquered realms.
*Also...as someone who likes and has looked at a fair amount of medieval art...that art is nowhere weird enough. Where's the weird positioning and the eccentricities of taste from a millenia ago? It looks way too modern.
*I absolutely loved Thor's reaction, though. And that he calls Loki's bluff immediately. That was satisfying.
*Also the double cross. I so badly want them to make up and have each other's backs but it would feel just...not quite there. I don't think they're there yet.
*"Asgard is not a place, it is a people" - mixed feelings. For one, well, it kind of takes away from the whole dusk of the gods bit, but on the other hand, it'd be a pretty depressing film. Secondly, how big is Asgard? I wonder if that tiny population is genetic bottleneck level yet. They got on the ship awful fast, and it's big but not that big.
*I thought the Grandmaster was the Collector, until I got home and looked up the film. Oops. (He has blue nail polish!) Was mostly meh on him, I guess.
*I am so glad they included the Valkyries!!
*I guess the number of Asgardians showing up in that world are pretty rare. Never mind the crown princes, lol. Otherwise she should look into covering that tattoo.
*Still, so glad to see she'll be returning! I am excited
*And that death-scene of the Valkyries that Loki forced her to see - I wonder if he saw them too? It was AWESOME.
