Agent Carter S2E6 (Life of the Party)

WHAT AN EPISODE

*Oh my god, Daniel, you look terrible. Oh no!!! What a night he's had - honestly, they've ALL had. Peggy looks fine if limping and in pain but Daniel's face is extremely expressive and it's just got intensity written all over it.

*On a realism vs not note, I sort of enjoy that there's a rather heightened unreality to the whole thing. Obviously it's MCU so there's the unrealistic superheroes, but they're not really in the show, but there's a very high body count, flashy injuries, but they're not debilitating the same way real injuries might be. Which is nice. I'm not that interested in really long drawn out recuperation seasons (though some h/c is always nice, if loaded with the emotional side of h/c) - mostly, I like action. And action is what we get.

*However Peggy!! do you really want to get dressed in a pencil skirt and blouse combo that definitely pushes on the injury?! Why not stay in your pyjamas?! They look nice!

*DOTTIE IS BACK!!!!! I have been waiting!!

*How does Peggy (or Daniel) know where Dottie is kept? She's been taken out of their custody. Dottie being taken away was sprung on Jack.

*I'm interested in Dottie's straightforward acceptance of Peggy's statement that the Soviet Union has not even tried to get her back. I wonder at her motivation. You could certainly motivate people in a way that twisted their expendability into greater patriotism (suicide missions etc) but Dottie's not intense about it in any way. What is she after? Why doesn't she care? Does she have no further means of communication back (seems unlikely)?

*On a random note, I'm not very good with faces so the hair colour changes are quite effective on me, but her voice is just the same, and it is all rather doting and playful towards Peggy.

*I would read fic where Peggy was Dottie's handler, in all sorts of permutations - if Peggy brought Dottie in and then Dottie became part of the SSR/SHIELD, AU where both of them are part of Leviathan (though that would be an interesting exploration of if Peggy would stay in the org given her views), more of this scenario where they are working together extremely uneasily because of necessity.

*PEGGY! This is such a bad idea! But considering last episode, they really are running out of resources. They had to bring in Samberly! So...yes terrible but also GREAT because we now get to watch Dottie infiltrate the party with Jarvis. Worth it.

*Speaking of Jarvis, he is still adorable and I would also watch an entire show just about him and Peggy doing spy things.

*I yell a lot about characters being bad at playing politics and manipulating people on this show, but one person who does is Whitney Frost. She can play this game and she can play it well. It is unfortunate that 1940s America does not permit her to actually be respected as a politician (or an inventor). I wonder about her marriage to Chadwick. Was it her idea or his? How did they meet? Did Chadwick own Isodyne when they met and that's why? It's her mind that propels and embodies the company, not his.

*I do enjoy Whitney's mask off anger. I can't say I like any of the council and it was rather terrifying and fun to watch half of them be disappeared. Are they coming back or are they dead?! Why is Wilkes the only one who is ghostly and present but the others are all gone? Isn't all the zero matter inside Whitney?

*On the subject of Chadwick and Whitney's marriage, I do think it was interesting that she turned to him at the end and said, "I trusted you" and seemed to mean it. And then I felt a little bad for her. I don't think she can trust anyone now.

*Daniel crumbling under Peggy's questioning and being honest - yesssss and then a stupid body falls out the window, damn it. But that's something they'll be thinking about! :D Though admittedly, even if he wanted to, you can't hide a broken engagement. It'll come out sooner rather than later. I do feel terrible for Violet though and wish she'd had a better storyline. It's pretty unfair to her and she was perfectly right to dump him then and there. Better to find out now than when married, I suppose. :(

*THE DIG VERNON MAKES TOWARDS JACK ABOUT PEGGY HAVING DIRT ON HIM. OMFG.
-I think if Jack had any distance, he would recognize that of all people, Peggy is the last person to ever use it against him by eg, blowing it to the press. She will (has) brought it up obliquely when dealing directly with him, sure - to be fair, tempers were running rather high at that point, too. But he has no distance. His secret is so so raw that he thinks it will obliterate him.
-Also - the way Vernon makes that statement about destroying Peggy. I'm honestly split between whether it would be more horrible for him to say "kill Peggy" or "destroy her reputation". He's so scummy, but not in an oily way at all, and I hate him. Perfectly genial exterior, wraps everything up in good palatable patriotic reasoning, plays on people's genuine desires to do good, but himself doesn't have any of those impulses and just uses others' to get them to work for him. It's the insincerity and the skill that gets to me, I think. Peggy's spent a lot of her adult life in combat and is prepared; she's also spent a lot of time being completely overlooked/downplayed for who she is, and the small steps that she has taken in that regard have been clawed for. How dare he so casually try to obliterate that!
-Jack visiting Peggy, trying to convince her to stop. Oh, Jack, you need to be honest. But he's too afraid to say it, or too confident he can ride it out OK. This is not going to go well. You've encountered Carter! You know what she's capable of! Don't put yourself between a rock and Carter! You have a chip and that's being honest and getting her to be on your side, I am sure she would help, but you can't have that without being honest. Which...now that I type that, I realize that's sort of one of his big flaws. Whoops.

*Oh my god Whitney Frost has Dottie. And Dottie actually looks apprehensive.

*The council may control media, but that's still a LOT of extremely well-connected, wealthy, prominent, and now missing men. There's only so much you can hush up. But then again...the show's not super realistic. I guess she will get away with it?!

YEEHEEEEE. I love this episode so much! It's got great Peggy and Dottie, Peggy and Jack, Jarvis and Dottie, Peggy and Daniel, Jack and Vernon, Whitney generally - basically all the good things. The scenes with Jarvis and Dottie and Jack at the party somehow manage to be hilarious and tense and actually kind of tragic all at the same time. (The bit with Jarvis swooping in to yoink Dottie out of the way before she can kill Jack! Jarvis cockblocking Jack!)

You're making me want to rewatch.

Lmaooo I guess this show didn't make such an impression on me (I watched it several years ago), because I don't remember most of what you discussed in this and the last post! :p I mainly remember her interacting with Stark's dad and Jarvis, and I do remember Whitney Frost well. Glad you are enjoying the snow though!

Lol yeah I've been on here a while, but I go between the two platforms interchangeably for cross posts...it looks like I added you at some point at least! ;) I have not updated here any more frequently though.

And ahhh your icon is bringing it back to me who Daniel is now. I did like that guy, including on Dollhouse.

A pandemic is a good time to catch up on old TV! I've been making my way through Parks & Rec.
