help, flist

I have a stupid question.

You know how Project Gutenberg lists all these works by author? They go like this:

[Author] [Birth & Death dates]
[Title] (Language) (as [something])

I've been using that site for years, and I still can't figure out what the heck the (English) (as Author) [or, you know, (Catalan) (as Editor)] next to each book means. I...I don't get it. At first I thought they were translations, indicating something?? Sometimes you get (English) (as Translator). I read through all the FAQs, but you guys, some of the FAQs sound like they haven't been updated since 2004. They don't appear on the Bookshelf browse pages, but do on LoC pages, which is further confusing - on the Bookshelf pages, they're just (Language).

Anyone else know? Or want to take a crack at puzzling? Here, have some links to random pages:
LoC PC classification (Literature of Romance Languages), and novels added within the last 24 hours, and LoC PD (Germanic & Scandinavian languages) which has (as Author of introduction) lower down (????).

Help! The question's driving me bonkers.

I assume, without any external verification that the listing is: (language) (whether person authored or translated text published in the listed language)?

Curtin, Jeremiah, 1835-1906
Let us follow Him (English) (as Translator)

Delany, Samuel R.
The Jewels of Aptor (English) (as Author)

Gill, Henry J.
The Cid Campeador
A Historical Romance (English) (as Translator)

Gummerus, K. J. (Kaarle Jaakko), 1840-1898
Haudankaivajan kertomuksia (Finnish) (as Author)

No, aaaaaaaaand no! :D

actually though seriously [personal profile] spiralsheep appears to be making sense. especially, can you search on a title or something? to see does it show different people with the translator/author? because that would for-sure probably tell you if you can.
