That sounds so disappointing that she has abandoned an interesting/challenging route.
It feels like a book that really wants to be comforting, but I feel like it kind of undercuts itself because it is so narrow in scope of the people it portrays. There are people in the world who don't even acknowledge they have feelings and simply scream, you know? There are people who would sooner explain themselves as hurl themselves over a cliff. But everyone in this book is so talky and everything gets so easily resolved. Even for people who like talking over their emotions, not every problem can be solved by talking out their feelings??
Some of it does come down to my personal preferences in fiction. I do like whimsy, but I find pure whimsy just too insubstantial for a novel. I like it best when it's also paired with a bite of more emotional depth, a lot of plot, etc.
