YAYYYYYY!

I really like the way lj_r and news has been going. And I don't mind at all that comments at news have been closed and lj_r open, because news has always been a bit of a disaster in the commenting area.

Around the time of the site redesign I think they got rid of Frank the Goat in the 404/access denied page. Unlike I feel 99% of the population, I didn't mind Frank, but it does look nice. Except for the colour-contrast problems, I really do like the re-design; a lot of the columns got reshuffled so there are fewer (so you don't have to check all them) and a lot more logical, at least for me. And the design is a lot nicer than the previous one. I find myself missing the old headers though. I remember the fun old designs, the burst of colours!

Mostly, though, I'm very encouraged with the way that feedback has been opened up. I think the userbase has always been vocal, and that immediate customer-facing staff has always been aware of the requests/desires of the userbase, but it seems that the requests are propagating up and that's awesome.

Also, I'm still alive, I'm just abroad at the moment and travelling for 3-4 days every weekend (and then busy Mon/Tues/Weds) and consequently very, very tired of packing and unpacking and also regretful that I never attempted to learn ALL THE LANGUAGES. Also, I've learned that 7am flights are really not worth it because one pays ridiculous cab fares in order to get to the airport because the metro system doesn't start early enough...So I'm a bit exhausted. And ready to go somewhere I can read the signage.

ETA/PS: I have been mostly following my flist on both lists in bursts of "read everything" (also, how fast is meme moving it leaps two posts every time I look) but if there's something big/exciting/fun/scary/insertadjective happened I'd love to hear it if you want to talk!

I no longer have a paid account on LiveJournal (PAF got squished) so my @livejournal email address won't work any more.

I give up!

SCRAPBOOK CURRENTLY SUCKS AND THE BETA DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING ON IT SO I'M WAITING UNTIL THE NEW SB COMES IN. Wrestling with flickr is a pain too. YES I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THE STRAIGHT URLS OF MY IMAGES WITHOUT THE MESS YOU MAKE OF THE HTML, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, WITHOUT NEEDING TO CLICK "SHARE" FIRST AND STRIPPING YOUR STUPID CODING AND SIZING AND JUNK OUT MANUALLY (THANK YOU, WORD, FOR SEARCH&REPLACE). SB, YOU DO NOT MAKE SENSE.

I have pictures! It's just that trying to stick them online is a pain. (Maybe having sixteen of them is the problem.)

Hi flist! I am still here. Just not updating often right now. (I am about to enter the busiest part of the year.)

The last week or so, in point form )

1. DDoS attacks are not designed to hack into databases. Your information and data is fine. It's just you can no longer access it.

2. If you have conspiracy theories about this being LiveJournal staff trying to "cover-up" anything, you can turn around and leave my journal.

2a. If you have anything that requires the words "The Russians", I seriously do not need to hear it. Please incinerate your xenophobia at the first bonfire you see.

3. As stated elsewhere, please hold off on trying to import your journal entries. See the links, and point number one.

4. To all the ops and staff: <333333333 and I hope you get a good night's sleep after all this is over.

My to-read pile (the physical one, not the mental one that stretches faaaar into the horizon) is becoming absurd. In addition to the rest of W&P, there is an intriguing book about van Rijn (knows ~nothing about art history), several nonfiction about Cicero and fall of Republic, a YA fantasy The Exiled Queen, and I still have yet to finish Atlas Shrugged. Which I started months ago. Added to this pile of books is the second and third discs of the second season of In Plain Sight, practices for everything (at the moment, the only night/afternoon I have free is Sunday) and February is busy. On top of that I do not feel very productive. Edited a FAQ today, did other minor things, but still. I feel as though I should be much more focused than I am.

Did you know LJ has a to-do list feature? Unfortunately, if you are a Plus user, you can't set security (everything is public). Still, that's nifty; I don't think it's well documented, which may be why there seems to be little awareness that such a thing exists.

I am accumulating so much knowledge (read: trivia) from answering Support requests. I am quite fine with my one userpic on LiveJournal and have no desire to add others, but I am now more or less an expert on how à la carte userpics work; I had no idea syndicated feeds existed for LJ/DW and, uh, now I know how do look for date out of order entries with them; did you know that you can forward your domain to LJ? or banning makes it impossible for the banned to comment, but not unfriend them?...some days I feel like the interior of my brain is a library of semi-organized trivia.

I see this all the time in Support requests.

Please, if you have information that you think is sensitive, do not share it publicly on the internet. On LiveJournal and Dreamwidth, you have the option to flock or to make the entry private. Flock isn't perfect, but at least third-party search engines can't index it - they don't know it exists, period.

Do not put private, sensitive, or embarrassing information about yourself online, connected to your real name, unless you are fine with everyone around you knowing. There are people who, in high school, put all sorts of information out, and now are scrambling to delete it so that potential employers don't find it. Write it down offline. Privatize. Flock. Lock to custom friends groups.

Please do take precautions. In most cases as there are no TOS violations, LiveJournal support can't do a thing to delete your embarrassing entries if you forget your password/username. Most search engines won't delete the cache unless you delete it first from LiveJournal. There is nothing we can do.

I've finally satisfied my urge to completely! go! bonkers! over tagging. Tagging with colons to form wonderful little straight subheading thingies on dw (I am very pleased with the multi-level list thingy), tagging for what I can see I might write - organization! ZOMG . (Sadly, not for this journal. I don't think I could stand going through that many entries, and suppose I added more tags! It would never end.) I realize I like this compartmentalization of stuff I anticipate will be unwieldy. I hate having all my writing scattered on my computer - they're in one folder, mostly, but chapters are split up, there's no way to tell what's going on, and they're all labelled differently.
silverflight8: a blinking Word cursor and text: it mocks me (writing)
I wrote a long post with this title. It promptly disappeared when I switched from HTML reader to Rich Text. I haven't the heart to type it up again (it was very long, full of random side notes and strange things) so I'm just going to assume one of the fates has indicated that she does not like my post--more likely than not--and so ate my post. (Actually, I think maybe I put in the WRONG CODE FOR THE CUT *hits self on head* OH VERY SMART.) Except writing nothing would feel very strange. Hence this mutant paragraph. Heh.

...instead I have been checking the news page on lj, hoping that they break the comments there. It's not so much drama as it is outrage: so far (though I haven't read them all), everyone seems to be screaming noooo at the top of their figurative lungs at the latest fiasco, and only a few trolls or people-in-complete-ignorance have been saying that the FB/Twitter connect is good (and they're getting dog-piled.)

If lj doesn't learn anything else, please let them learn what good customer service means--please talk to your userbase, so that the thousands of commenters don't get angrier and angrier as no one responds...

Other thought: anyone read Atlas Shrugged? Opinions?

Dear LJ in general:

I hope you realize that a lot of your site's users are in fandom. A lot. They also do this thing called "shipping", which basically means you pair (or put in groups of two or more) characters together and write romantic stories. These pairings are denoted by slashes: i.e., /. You do realize that by removing those from your acceptable tags, that you've just royally screwed up any community that uses them? As well as the writers, who tag their stories this way? And that many fans stay on LJ because of the fandom?

Well done, LJ. Nicely done.

I'm off to England (OK, fine, it's actually Great Britain; I don't think we're going to Ireland/Northern Ireland) and France. And I shall go back to paper-and-pen journaling and not look at communities. I think.

I'll catch up on f-lists and things (avalanches of comments on long-ago posts may occur) when I get back in mid-August. If there's suddenly a big emergency (and why this would occur I have truly no idea) but if it does happen and you need to contact me, try PM-ing me. Have a lovely summer.

This diversity statement on dreamwidth makes me feel so hopeful. That maybe some people get it.

My favorite statement: we believe it's possible for people of all viewpoints and persuasions to come together and learn from each other. We believe in the broad spectrum of human experience.

And also this: You're not demographic groups. You're people.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
